Installing DeskMan/2 on a Single Computer

DeskMan/2 provides three methods for installation - Express, Custom, and CID (Configuration, Installation, and Distribution).

Use Express install if you wish to select one location for all the components' program files and an optionally separate location for all the supporting data files (i.e. two locations, total).

Use Custom install if you wish to:

Use CID to install DeskMan/2 on a large number of computers. CID installations are described in that section.

To begin installing DeskMan/2 using either the Express or Custom methods:

  1. Insert DeskMan/2 installation diskette #1 into the appropriate floppy disk drive, and open the Drives object that corresponds to the floppy drive, and open the INSTALL.EXE object.
  2. The DeskMan/2 Installation Tool will create a temporary directory called DTI_TMP on your boot drive into which it will unpack the files on Diskette #1. When prompted, remove Diskette #1 and insert Diskette #2. The Installation Tool will unpack the remaining files.

The Installation Tool will automatically remove the temporary directory and its contents at the successful completion of the installation process.

  3. After the files have been successfully unpacked, the DeskMan/2 Installation Tool will display the Welcome screen:

Before continuing to install the DeskMan/2 programs, take a moment to explore this dialog window. Select the Actions item from the menu bar. In addition to installing DeskMan/2 using either the Express or Custom methods, using this menu you can also:

Make no selections from this menu at this time.

Select the Default Drive item from the menu bar, and the DeskMan/2 Installation Tool will open a dialog window asking you to select the drive on which to install the DeskMan/2 components.

Whether using the Express or Custom installation method, you can specify the drives and paths on which to install the components. Changing the default drive using this menu item makes this process much simpler, and you can still designate the locations of selected items.

Select the default drive that matches your needs, then click your <left mouse button> on the button labeled OK.

At the bottom of the Welcome window, above the buttons, the DeskMan/2 Installation Tool displays the current installation configuration file. The DeskMan/2 Installation Tool creates this file when you install the DeskMan/2 components, and uses it to save all your installation selections.

If this is your first installation, this file does not yet exist. You can change the name or location of this file, and you can create and select multiple files if you wish. If you should later need to reinstall DeskMan/2, you can simplify your efforts by using this file to tell the DeskMan/2 Installation Tool how to install the components.

  4. If you do not wish to customize your installation, click your left mouse button once on the button labeled "Express install".

If you prefer to more tightly control where the programs and support files are installed, click your left mouse button once on the button labeled "Custom install".

  5. If this is an initial installation, the DeskMan/2 Installation Tool will display the Software License Agreement dialog window.

IMPORTANT - The text in the above figure does not represent the entire software license agreement. Be sure to read the entire Software License Agreement displayed in the dialog window and its following pages carefully. You will find a copy of the Agreement in the front of this book.

If you do not agree to all the terms and conditions of the entire Software License Agreement, click your left mouse button once on the button labeled No, and the DeskMan/2 Installation Tool will stop without installing the software. Exit from the Installation Tool.

If you agree to all the terms and conditions in the Software License Agreement, click your left mouse button once on the button labeled Agree. The DeskMan/2 Installation Tool will continue with the installation.

  6. If you selected "Express install", go on to this section.

If you selected "Custom install", go on to this section.
